THAT’S THEIR PROBLEM

by Mr. Mean-Spirited

You know what they say about a drowning man.  If you try to save somebody floundering about in the ocean – then he will only drag you under the water.  It is better to let the stranger die – than to risk being killed yourself.  If someone else life is in peril, that’s his problem.

You know the risk.  You see a stranger afflicted with some loathsome disease.  You don’t rush to his assistance – because you might contract the infection yourself.  You don’t comfort the hurting – because you don’t want to come down with whatever he’s got.  If someone else is suffering, that’s his problem.

You know what always happens.  You observe a woman taking a beating by an aggrieved husband.  You’ve heard what always happens with domestic violence – if you intervene, both participants will turn upon you.  Might as well let the couple work it out.  You don’t know the situation, so don’t stick your nostrils into their affairs – if you don’t want to get your nose broken don’t sniff around other people.  A wife’s black eye is her problem – after all, she chose the bastard, so she deserves to receive the consequences of her choice.  You weren’t involved in their very-muscular courtship, and you need respect their privacy.  If a person is unable to experience the all the misfortune arising from a bad decision, then they can’t ever receive the full blessings of a wise determination.

You know the menace.  You don’t dare to help the less-fortunate without having them take advantage of you.  If you don’t want someone to steal your wallet, then don’t pull out your billfold to give a bum a dollar.  When you are around other people, keep your eyes open, your mouth closed, and your money hidden.

You know the danger.  You witness a stranger being robbed by armed assailants.   If you get in their way, you could end up getting shot yourself.  As long as you aren’t losing your own valuables, it’s not your problem.  The only thing that being compassion will get you is a bullet hole.  Involving yourself in someone else’s affairs is not an act of kindness, but an act that will get you killed.

What this world needs is not more busy-bodies, but more citizens who mind their own business.  Respecting other people is best served by leaving them alone.  If you want to live in freedom, then don’t interfere in other’s lives – no matter what.

Charity begins at home – and ought to end there too.

  1. "When you are around other people, keep your eyes open, your mouth closed, and your money hidden." Sage advise. Part of keeping your money hidden involves being modest. Flaunting wealth has always been garish, these days it's just downright stupid. Even if you can afford a $50,000 car, it's best to get a cheap/plain one instead. Being the grey man has never been more prudent than now.

  2. I had to learn this lesson the hard way. It was the done thing, I was always taught, to help others. Always wanting to be helpful and nice to other people put me into too much shit. Good intentions never meant anything to people who are too fucked up to appreciate.

It's also happened to me before that I've had unasked for trouble in public and no one in the area stepped in to assist me. So I'm happy to return the non-favour.

And the world definitely needs fewer do-gooders. The well intentioned have caused more havoc and pain in the world than the average selfish bastard.

  3. Yesterday, at a service station, I gave a guy a battery jump off. I wonder when this good deed will go punished.

    1. I’ve always been worried that jump-starting another fellow’s car might well cause incremental damage to my own battery.

    1. Not exactly. Nobility comes from accepting human nature exactly as it is.
